"It 'Took Some Time"

On the surface, Jimmy Kimmel‘s friendship with ex and fellow comedian Sarah Silverman seems totally natural, but he can attest to the fact that staying friends after heartbreak is never easy.

The Jimmy Kimmel Live! host, 51, stopped by Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on Monday night, and he opened up about keeping the Wreck-It Ralph actress, 48, in his life after they split in 2009.

When a caller asked him if their post-split bond was quick or if it took work, Kimmel responded, “I would say that it took some time, definitely … It was never like where we didn’t like each other, hated each other or anything like that. But it definitely took some time to be comfortable enough to be friends again.”

Fans of the pair should be glad things worked out at least platonically, because it’s yielded a few hilarious selfies and some great repartee between the comics.

At the 2019 Golden Globes, the actress snapped a picture of herself with Kimmel and his wife, Molly McNearney, who he married in 2013. The couple is snuggled up and smiling in the background, which prompted Silverman to caption the hilarious moment, “Good times.”

As for Silverman’s own love life, she actually gave Kimmel an update back in September on his late-night show.

“What’s going on with me dating wise?” she quipped to her ex. “I’m waiting for this tryst with you to be over.”

The School of Rock alum went on to joke about McNearney specifically.

“Okay, Molly’s cute, she’s bright, she’s funny, she’s blonde, but come on!”

“I have bad news,” Kimmel replied. “We’ve been married for five years.”

Then Silverman took the chance to poke fun at the host’s career trajectory.

“It’s not fair! She gets like new, woke Jimmy. I had Man Show Jimmy,” she said, referencing Kimmel’s Comedy Central show.

But then, Silverman got a little more serious, discussing her break-up with actor Michael Sheen.

“I was with Michael. We broke up over Christmas [2017]. He moved back to the U.K. and his life is really there and my life is really not there, but I love him to pieces,” she explained. “If he’s in town and we’re both single, we will make love.”

In February, Silverman announced on Twitter that she and the Midnight in Paris star had “consciously uncoupled.”

“We just live in different countries & it got hard,” she tweeted. “Felt we should just tell y’all so u stop askin, ‘How’s Michael/How’s Sarah?’ ”
